EMC/EMI Compliance

Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is unwanted generation, transmission and reception of electro-magnetic energy with reference to the unwanted effects (Electromagnetic interference, or EMI) that such energy may induce. The purpose of EMC is the appropriate operation, in the same electro-magnetic(EM) environment, of various equipments that use electro-magnetic phenomena, and the avoidance of any interference effects.

In order to achieve this, EMC is associated with two different kinds of issues. The Emission issues are related to the unwanted generation of electromagnetic energy by some source, and to the counter-measures which should be taken in order to reduce such generation and to avoid the escape of any remaining EM energies into the external environment. Susceptibility or Immunity issues, on the other hand, refer to the satisfactory operation of electrical equipments, referred to as the victim, in the presence of unplanned electromagnetic disturbances. There are two types of emissions associated with the electromagnetic compatibility that are Conducted Emissions (CE) and Radiated emissions (RE). CE test determines the radiations propagated along connectors and cables, causing noise in the electrical & electronic systems. A product manufacturer needs to check the susceptibility by choosing proper filter in the conduction path. Emissions of all equipment need to be arrested & suppressed ensuring there are no disturbances to other equipment running on the same connectors and cables. RE test is conducted to determine the disturbance caused to the device under test in the presence of any radiation source. EMI /EMC these days applies to most of the equipments using electrical energy and susceptible to generating undesirable electronic noises. Presently equipments that are covered under the EMC/EMI requirements are from consumer electronics, power electronics, electric motors, automobiles/equipments/accessories, industrial, scientific, medical equipments, power lines & conductors electronics surveillance devices, wireless devices, telecom equipments, mobiles & towers, IC engines, house hold & kitchen appliances, electrical tools, electrical lighting, IT equipments, induction heating, electro static discharge industrial plants, power system, high altitude equipments etc.

Interference reduction and hence electromagnetic compatibility is achieved by addressing both emission and susceptibility issues, i.e. suppressing the sources of interference and protecting the potential victims. The coupling path between source and victim may also be separately addressed to increase its attenuation.

BTHPL has fully operationalizing EMI-EMC test facilities the test facility for various parameters as per Indian as well as International Standards related to electromagnetic interferences and Compatibility.

Wireless Devices (EMC/EMI)

Wireless devices have found its wider applications across variety of very high tech products (Keyboard, Scanners, Laptops, and Printers etc.) to very low-end products including electronic toys. Many products operated on electrical power, can be operated through the wireless devices primarily for Convenience and Safety of human beings. Now-a-days, even Pedestal/Ceiling fans can also be operated through the wireless control instead of manual control. Hence Safety is also a matter of concern since it radiates certain amount of power. To address this issue, BTHPL has also added to its test facility to examine wireless devices operations, performance and safety.

The EMC/EMI test facility would also cover tests on various low power wireless devices being used in the IT & Electronic products for satisfactory remote operations as per IS/IEC/EN/WPC/TEC requirements.
